Canada 2003 Echo Engine light blinks at ecceleration, shudders, idles rough

My car is a standard and was working fine not indication of any troubles. Stopped and pumped $20 gas.
Started to drive and car starts running rough especially at low speeds. Going up hill is brutal. Engine light flash when trying to eccelerate, slow getting up to speed, shudders- not a lot of power, once up to speed engine light turn off. Press the gas to go up hill- engine light comes back on and it begins all over, it also sounds like it is not running on all cylinders.
Is there any suggestions: fuel pump, fuel injection...spark plugs and wires? Something more serious

check the engine codes....but flashing light usually means misfires

sounds like your engine is dying.

Try the simple things first. You say this started after you filled up. The gas station tank may have been contaminated with ground water. Pour in a couple of bottles of gas line antifreeze and see what happens.

Toyota Echo runs rough and engine light blinks at slow speed

I have the same problem: I have a Toyota Echo which runs rough at slow speed and the engine light blinks, it just happened on my way to work so I had to turn around and get back home. I didn't get any new gas and I just drove the car this morning and had no problems. I have a good idea what it is, probably an ignition coil, but I need to figure out which one (one for each spark plug). I had this same problem about a year ago and I replaced one of the ignition coils but now I cant remember how i figured it out..? They run about 120 bucks each and that's for aftermarket parts, not cheap!

When I find out what it exactly is causing the problem and how i figured it out I will post here and hopefully it will help anyone with the same issue.

Okay, after process of elimination (see previous post in this thread Testing ignition coils on 2001 Echo) I figured out that the aftermarket ignition coil I bought from Advance Auto Parts about a year ago was bad. So I called the local store and they had one in stock (lucky) and informed me that the part was covered under a lifetime warranty (awesome!).

Now a word of warning: I had purchased the original part and some spark plugs from Advance Auto Parts online about a year ago, and I picked up the spark plugs at my local store but had to go to another Advance store to pick up the coil. So after the Advance clerk on the phone informed that the part was under warranty I let him know I no longer had that receipt from a year ago, but he said don't worry they can pull it up in the computer. So when I got to the store they could not find it in the computer, they could see all of my in-store purchases, but not the online order. So they called the other store where I picked up the coil and they could not find it either. So after some time trying to find it they eventually gave up and I was afraid they would make me pay for the new part - but they were great and exchanged the part anyway and I was a happy customer - because that saved me 106 bucks plus tax. Great customer service at Advance Auto Parts! But just beware buying parts online to always keep a paper trail!

So anyway I got home and installed the new coil on the engine and it purrs like a cat again, easy fix!
