Is it possible to install a cone filter on an Echo 2004?

There are two sensors (guessing they are sensors, not really sure) connected to the box, so if I remove it I'm not sure what would happen to those. Has anyone done this before? Did some googling but didn't find anything specific to the Echo.

I have an aem cai with a cone filter. The one sensor is the mass air flow sensor and is required for the engine to run. Can't think offhand what the other one is.

If you're thinking about making your own cold air intake, you have to engineer the sensor into it. If I was doing it over again (and hadn't got a good deal on a used cai) I would cut up the stock intake and use parts of it in order to incorporate the sensors.

Is the other sensor a temperature sensor by chance? Dunno why I think so (just a wild guess, might have read it somewhere).

Have a look at this image which I found here,

The two "sensors" I'm referrering to are boxed off in red. Could you identify them? From what I can tell, it seems to be possible to connect the MAF sensor to the filter using and adapter similar to this.

Let me know what you all think.

Not too keen on taking apart the stock intake just yet, in case I need to reuse it, so that might be out for the time.

the one on the right is the maf. the sensor has to be able to 'sense' the airflow going into the engine.

the upper left one is connected to the evap line. you don't have to unplug it; it just happens to be mounted on the air filter box. all you have to do is find a way to mount it so it isn't hanging loose in the engine bay

it looks like the 'tuner' in the picture used a performance k&n filter that drops into the stock airbox and replaced the stock snorkle with the dryer vent hose.

I can't picture how that nissan adapter works. If you unscrew the maf (carefully; those screw heads are often rusty and easy to strip), you will be able to see how the sensor needs to be oriented to the airflow.

I'll probably have a look at it sometime (as soon as I build up some confidence! Actually I thought it would have been a simple job of removing the air box and clamping on the cone filter, but I guess not). Also where is the air intake temperature sensor located?

One thing I noticed is that the cone filter (that was bought for me) is about 3" in diameter, whereas the intake hose (between the air box and the engine) definitely looks to be less than that (maybe 2.5" in diameter, guessing here, didn't measure it), so that'll be another thing to overcome.

Maybe the adapter for the Sentra is shaped differently. Actually have a look at this (just pulling random images off the net here). It seems that sensor would be bolted onto the adapter and then connected to the air intake to the engine. I suppose the Echo's sensor is made up differently (haven't had a proper look at it as yet).

yes, the image you posted is about what you're looking for.
I've noticed those 3" filters are sold cheap out of china. My used aem intake didn't have the cone filter with it. I had to buy a k&n one to get the right size (2 or 2 1/4") I think.
if you're new to wrenching, spend some time learning how to do a tune-up, clean up the engine bay and use some rust inhibitor on anything that looks like it needs it.
internet research is good, but you have to get your hands dirty too

First of all, thanks for all the help/advice you've given me (in both threads). I guess it is pretty obvious I'm a total newbie here (this is my first car - maybe I should have spent some more time around my dad when he used to mess around with our car all those years ago).

Anyway I think I'll get the timing issue (other thread) sorted out first before I venture any more into this one.

Which one are you referring to? This one (from my last post)? If so, then that's for a Sentra, I haven't see one like that for the Echo (based on my googling anyway).

Can you post a pic of your setup (would like to see where the MAF sensor fits in). What do you think of this adapter for the sensor?

Here ya go. I think you could make something similar from supplies at home depot. Assuming you have that other issue sorted out...

If the pic above doesn't show, check my profile, I'll upload it to my album

Where is your MAF sensor anyway? Can't seem to identify it.

I had an aFe cone intake on my xA. Maybe they make one for the Echo or you could mod the xA one...given the similarties between the 2 cars.

that looks like a similar setup to mine which came from an xB. Ferraz, you can see the maf sensor at the bottom of the pic (it's only partly visible)

I'm working on a home brew intake. The aem one is fine, but I want to make something that I can add a water methanol nozzle, and possibly a nitrous nozzle as well

Just a thought here (still didn't go ahead with anything just yet)...

I noticed that both of you (2005RS and Billiam) have your intakes with the filter right next to the engine. Wouldn't it be better to get an intake that runs from the engine block straight across to just behind the left headlight (where the stock intake gets its air from). Of course the stock box and intake would have been removed. Wouldn't this speed up the air flow to the engine rather than having to go through the two 90 degree angles in the intakes above? Or would the MAF sensor have to be recalibrated to accommodate for this?

Perhaps I'm missing something very basic here?

yes, I think you're right. I've mocked up an intake using the stock air box that I canabalized to get the maf mounting and some pvc pipe. I had to open up the wiring harness so that the maf would reach the new location, but other than that, I think it will work.
