Replacing the catalytic converter on 2001 Echo

My 2001 Echo has the CEL on, and the P0420 code. Replacing both O2 sensors didn't help, so I guess the catalytic converter has to be replaced.

It seems to be one whole unit, about 7 feet long. I've seen 3rd party units for about $300.

How easy/difficult is this job? (i.e., how much cussing and how many knuckles am I gonna hurt)?

Thanks...

Same situation for me. I bought the whole unit for 3-something.

You might want to check the condition of the exhaust flange where the new one will bolt on. The spring bolts on mine are rusted solid, so until I figure out a way to get them out, it's not happening. Once they are out, this is an easy job. Disconnect the O2 sensors, all of the rubber hangers, and unbolt the tailpipe.

When you replaced the rear O2 sensor, did you pull the wires out of the connector on the inside of the car?

As I recall, catalyctic convertors have a federally mandated 100,000 mile warranty. Might want to check with your local dealer on this before shelling out big bucks. It might not even be the catalyctic convertor. Before spending money that might very well be unnecessary, it might be wise to take your car to a professional automotive technician to have it correctly diagnosed, instead of taking an expensive guess, which has already failed you with the oxygen sensors.

Diagnose first, then replace, not the other way around. This will save you time, hassle and money.
