Brake/transmission problem?

I really don't know what is the problem here. And maybe someone here can tell me.

I took my Echo (automatic transmission) for an 80 mile trip and it was working fine. But then 2 days later (I havent used the car for 2 days after that trip) I started it up, applied the foot brakes, let the e brake off and put it in Reverse and ease off the foot brake but the car won't move. I applied a little gas and there was as some sort of metal scrapping sound. I got out the car, I didn't hit any curb, nothing was blocking the wheels. So I put it back to Park, engaged the E brakes and turn off and on the car again. And I attempted to back up again, this time the car moved back after I eased off the foot brakes. but as soon as I applied the foot brakes again there is a grinding noise. Even After I put it in Drive, and came to a stop at the red light, the grinding noise is still there. It comes on even with the slightest pressure on the foot brakes.

It was not like this during the trip. The brakes were quiet during the trip and silent.

Can It be a stuck brake which is why the car didn't back up the first try? Or transmission?

I'm not really sure. This car only has 44,XXX Miles and I'm don't want to let it die now.

Hope its not transmission cause that costs $$$$$$$$$. Unless its a manual a little cheaper. Anyway, I'm guessing brakes. they might be stuck or something got in there. It could also be the parking brake itself needs adjusting. Best of luck!!

hmm metal scrapping sound ... sounds like the brakes are shot! Get em changed out or at least get them looked at soon before you gotta start changing rotors.

There is a pretty good youtube vid on how the change them yourself. You'll need a few 14mm wrench and sockets, jack stands... Looks pretty easy! I'd also get a c-clamp. I doubt your tranny would be going out at 44K. But your brakes could esp if you are in heavy traffic a lot.
