echo transmission problem

I have just aquired a 2000 echo 5speed. The transmission is making the annoying grinding/scraping sound. It doesn't make a sound in 1st or 2nd gear, but once I hit 3rd it starts. And it gets louder as I shift up. I asked the guy who had it before me and he said its been doing it for a long time, like over 2 years. I've seen it could be the input shaft bearing? I am figuring on replacing that transmission because I can't stand the noise anymore. Does anyone know if a yaris transmission could be used or can I only use an echo transmission?

Sorry to hear of your trouble. I would first take a stab in the dark by changing the trans oil as it may be low or very dirty. I have contacted my buddy at a local salvage yard and he said his salvage interchange says the following will fit your car.
ECHO 00-02 M.T.
ECHO 03-05 M.T.; 14" tire

It looks like they only call out 14" wheels because of axle ratio for the 03-05 model years, 15" wheel type will work but your speedo will be off a little.

My guess is that maybe the bracket mounting points are probably different and won't mount. I have checked rock auto and the flywheel and starter is the same but the clutch and slave cylinder are different. Perhaps someone else maybe be able to chime in about the Yaris to Echo interchangeability. Hope this helps.

I was wondering because I've heard they have the same engine. But ill try changing the fluid this weekend. I'm sure that has never been changed. I did add some as it was about 1/2 qt low. But that made no difference. Just yesterday i notced the sound quieted down a good bit on my way to work after being parked on a hill over night. It was really noisy on my way home then after being on a level surface. But I'm gonna guess for the wheels, the put in lower profile tires to reduce rolling resistance. They look to be about the same size over all. Thanks for your input! Right now any I can get is highly appreciated. These foreign cars are new to me. Ive stuck with my big powerstrokes and cummins for the past while until I was spending $140 a week in fuel and found this for a good price.

Glad to be of any help. Good luck with your car. I have had great service out of mine. I here you on the gas prices, that's why my wife and I drive japanese "weed-wackers" as my F-150 driving meet-head buddy puts it. I'd rather put my money in the bank than in the tank.

if you gonna change the trans fluid try red line. Might as well go with the best if your going to do it. Amazon sells it with free shipping if you can't get it from locally.

Hey why dont you rebuild the trans, manuals are the easiest to do and then you wont have fitment problems and you know the box will be as good as brand new!!!

I would but I found a used one that cost a lot less than a rebuild kit. I wanna rebuild this for a backup tranny when I do get the time.

okay, my echo did the same thing. Ended in a complete fail of the tranny. I believe that the throwout bering was bad. I drove it, until it broke. It broke so bad, that it killed the clutch, and froze my gearbox, rendering the ECHO unable to move. Get it fixed, before you have to pay >2K getting it fixed.

Mine ended up being the mainshaft bearing. The plastic retainer for the rollers cracked and fell apart.
