Breaking in an engine?

Any tips on how to break in an overhauled engine? My mechanic told me to come back after 1000 km, driving at about 70-80 km/h tops, and if absolutely necessary 100 km/h (sounds a bit high to me but anyway).

In any case, I've read various articles on how to do it but because they vary so much I'm left in the blue here. How do I go about doing it? Once I build up speed to get into fifth gear is it okay to remain there, or do I have to (more or less) constantly be changing the gear?

Like you said there are many approaches to this. I guess if you want to be on the safe side just take it easy for awhile and do routine maintenance or check ups. I'm sure it will be fine but I guess be nice to it for awhile. Sorry that probably doesn't help lol. I don't know too much on that part.

I changed my oil at 300 miles. Then at 2500 miles and 5000 miles. Drove at a variety of speeds but never at at high rpm.
You will read that the tolerances of the new cars don't require a break in period. BUT, I worked in a bearing manufacturing plant with tight tolerances and it is a fact that marginal product does get passed inspections. Therefore, I chose to break in my yaris the slow n easy way. What the heck, it doesn't cost you anything.
