Hi, I thnk we bought a lemon '94 Paseo. This week the radiator boils when you start the car up even when it is cold. It then runs hot after a few minutes. We have a radiator on order because it was clear that the previous owner had been using some StopLeak. Could this be from anything simple? My husband suspects it may have a blown head gasket. Any comments? Thanks in advance! Debbie
heres a test to see if it has a blown head gasket. take the radiator cap off (make sure the car is totally cool). then start the car. once the engine starts running, if the water/coolant is bubling out or slowly overfiling then thats a sign that a water passage on the head gasket has blown and is letting the "reaction" occuring in one of the four cylinder enter into the water passage thru this broken section of head gasket. you can also check the oil dipstick and if the oil looks like diahreah,(sorry get gross) or a white sludge then its a sign that the water is getting into the oil. this may mean that the block or head has a crack in it possibly, and is letting water enter into the oil pan.(this is serious if this is the problem. instead of fixing i would just buy another motor for 450$[the 5efhe with under 70,000km=43,750miles] instead of fixing)
the 5efe engine is in your car, the 5efhe(found in japan) is literally the same as your engine but with some added goodies making it more powerful. and the best thing is that it can be used with all of your existing 5efe stuff(ecu computer, injectors, engine harness'...etc)
he got me my 5efhe...very good guy and can help you all the way. don't be afraid to ask questrions here. I and many others will try our best to help you.
Find out what the cost of the new headgaskt would be.(for me it was 600$...thats why i switched to the 5efhe)
It failed the test. It does appear to have a blown head gasket. My husband has replaced motors in Volvos and a Mustang. Would replacing a Paseo be harder since there isn't much room under the hood? Thanks for the help! Debbie
hes rplaced m,otors on volvos!.!..this should ba a sinch for him then. easy as cake. he should have no problem with this. like i said earlier if you need help just post here and im sure one of the members will be able to get to it.
stupid question in response to your "diagnose" reply...My 3ee engine on my 91' tercel has "failed" that radiator test, also. I was wondering if i were to put some of that "Aluminum stop leak" stuff in there...would that patch up the problem? Cuz the product claims it seals up things even on head or cylinder cracks?
for a BHG why would you replace then engine?? If it hasn't overheated just simply replace the gasket, and get the head resurfaced.. A lot easier than swapping an entire engine..
As for the stop leaks.. don't even think about it. Severly limits the flow of fluid through your cooling system.. It doesn't know where the leaks are so it coats EVERYTHING.
Well i want to know what's the diff between cooper and aluminum? I bought the aluminum...but is there really a diff?
And if i put it in and it DOES block the flow of water severely....a flush would remove it, right?
a flush may removbe it. but you would need one from the toyota. @ toyota(some of them) they hook you system up to a machine then its the machines job to flush your sytem out. nissan does the same with their engine flushes for example.
180,625miles!...wow...looks like you lucked out considering thats a 3ee. to be honest I'll say this much to save you the headache. look into possibly changing the motor to a 5efe or maybe even a 5efhe. many people told me this and i didnt want to belive them. turned out 1.5 years later and after going thru 1 motor change to a 3ee, then having 2 blown head gaskets (within another 1.5 years) i just changed the engine and haven't had a problem since. the 3ee is known for bad head issues. warping, cracked walls, blown head gaskets. i honestly think the 3e was intended solely as a carbed engine instead of moving it to fuel injected. and by the way everytime my 3ee was swapped or fixed(headgasket) it was done by a professional. the only time i had an influence was when i installed the 5efhe myself.(by then i had done enuff studying and looking around for info)
even my sisters 92 tercel is having crazy problems as well. it eats oil. 3ee are also known for having a serious oil eating problem. majority of the time it stems from the valve stem seals. other times its from the piston rings(this case usually occurs when the engine is taken to redline often. as a conservative single overhead cam engine this would be the last thing you want to do.)
yeah mine eats oil a fair amount, but only cuz of the seals. I was thinking of replacing them, but i'm not so sure. I want a whole new car all together, but am considering just replacing the motor like you say. It's cheaper and at least i won't have to worry about car payments and stuff if i return to school.
I don't burn oil while i drive though...not visibly anyway.
You know any good places in Canada (particularly Montreal,Quebec) where i might find a good price for a 5efe?
