Hey guys, I'm about to purchase my 2005 ECHO sedan and wanted to put on some 17" rims on it ... just wondering if this is a good idea or if those wheels would be too big?
You'll be running 30 series tires if you can find them. Keep the offset nearer to 40, no wider than 6.5 inches, no tire width greater than roughly 195 and you might not rub all the time. Every little pothole and expansion joint will bend your rim, but that's your choice.
Forgive my ignorance but I don't know much about wheels and rims at all ... are you suggesting that 17s are good for show but not practical? Would 16s be a better choice?
Yes, yes, and yes. 16s are also lighter. I would also consider lightweight 15s (konig heliums seem popular for echo) + lowering the car if you want better performance.
If it clears the brakes, it's big enough. Anything larger is all bling, no performance. Given the very small change in weight going to a +1, I would go to 15's myself, gaining on the sidewall stiffness and sacrificing only a little weight at the circumference.
How do the 15s look in comparrison to the 16s? I'm looking for something to differentiate the car a bit and I thought the wheels would be a good start. I think that the 14s that come with the car look much too small but I haven't seen what 15s look like.
...on a more serious note, they do make for a good look. Most people do not see them as too small like the 14's, nor oddly large like 16-17 inchers appear. Nothing looks worse IMO than big shiny rims over itty-bitty little brakes...
Lowering, could be done for well under a grand the cheap and dirty way, roughly $1k for it to be done with quality springs and dampers, or a couple of g's for coilovers.
Those are the OEM Canadian Echo Hatchback RS 14" alloys. Same as mine. Mine is lowered on Eibach Pro-Kit, also an AEM intake, Custom dual exhaust, vinyl wrapped interior and B-Pillars, TRD strut tower brace...etc...etc...
Sorry for my lack of pics, my hatch has been stored for the last 6 months since I was injured in a MVA and can't drive right now.

Sedan can take 17x7 with rubber size of 205/40/17 with +42 offset.

I run 205/40R17 on my ADR 17x7. The only time I get rub is when I do a hard right and hit a pothole in the turn with left front. The weight on the left front of the car leaning and the tire going up from the pothole causes a quick rub. This has happened twice, both times on the same onramp.
