how to tell if you need motor mounts

Hey, can someone out there tell me how you can tell if your car needs motor mounts? I was told that I would be needing them soon. Was wondering what are the signs that you need them if there are any. I hear it is expensive? not as expensive as a new car though!

Pop the hood, and have a friend shift gears and give it some gas with it in gear (foot also on the brake of course). If the engine moves around more than little bit then your mounts are probably not in very good shape.

USA thanks for the info!

Yeah, thanks so much for the info. When I start my car and put it in drive, without giving it any gas, I can hear a kinda thunk nose like its learchin a little! So, I guess i do need some. Any idea about what would make my Tercel idle wierd(slower and like it could die) when in reverse? Could it be I need a tune up or possible something else?
