Gas mileage surveys......

I just joined this group after purchasing my '03 Echo 2 weeks ago. It's a 4 door sedan, automatic, A/C, 14" wheels (will be upgrading to 15"), power windows and door locks. I kind of like this ugly little car. Just got the windows tinted with Quantum Solargard and will be upgrading the standard cd/tape/FM unit with a satellite ready unit and also the speakers --transplant from my old car. Anyway, I am interested to know if anyone here would be interested in posting their various gas mileages per gallon. I will start with a format that I think is fairly comprehensive:

Trans: Auto.
A/C used: about 50% of the time.
Average miles driven daily: app. 50 (work round trip, mainly)
Type of driving: 80% freeway averaging app. 60 mph. (some stop and go)
and 20% city streets stop and go.
Type of gas used: Mobil or Union 76 (I am in California) I have heard bad things about ARCO and Shell (class action high sulfur law suit for Shell, water in gas for ARCO) I use 87 Octane unleaded.
I would describe my driving as: not a jackrabbit driver, try to use a smooth gas pedal.
Average gas mileage so far: Consistently 30 MPG.
Passengers in car: 90% just myself, except on the weekends.

The question I have is why is there so much difference between MPG in the same type cars, I mean, not just a few MPG, but up to 25%. I think that I am not getting the MPG that is advertised on this car? Also, can anyone tell me how 15" wheels will affect my speedometer/odometer readings?

Thanks.....

Depends on your driving. Being heavy on the acceleration and things like that will affect. My wife has a 2003 Echo an my dad has a 2001 echo. he can get between 600-700kms a tank, she only gets just over 500kms. She has a heavy foot!. It's a little ngine and guzzles twice the gas to get more pick-up. Also running your A/C will burn a bit more too!

Trans: Manual
A/C used: about 30% of the time.
Average miles driven daily: irrelevant, (think MILES per gallon) but for the record 90 miles
Type of driving: 90% freeway averaging app. 70mph and 20% city streets stop and go.
Type of gas used: 87 octane (higher octane does not increase fuel mileage enough to justify the added cost, plus I ain't driving a Porsche)
I would describe my driving as: silky-smooth acceleration up to high speeds
Average gas mileage so far: Consistently 43 MPG.
Passengers in car: 90% just myself, except on the weekends

This is an '05 echo hb.

From what i understand same motor as older echos. I am a bit shocked at 30 mpg for JLIFT. Automatic obviously drops the efficiency some 10%.

I drive predominantly highway kms and frequently cruise at 75 mph (open canadian highways :] ) Amazing gas mileage considering these speeds.

Year: 2005
Model: 5 Door
Trans: Auto.
A/C used: about 50% of the time.
Average miles driven daily: 25 (40km) (work round trip, mainly)
Type of driving: 70% freeway avg app. 55 mph. (3 sets of lights each way on daily commute) and 30% city streets stop and go.
Type of gas used: Lowest Grade, 87 Octane I think. Petro-Can until my free gas card is used up, then I'll use Esso with my speedpass.
I would describe my driving as: Slow accelaration, no speeding.
Average gas mileage so far: 36 MPG (42-43 Imp.MPG) over first few tanks.
Passengers in car: 90% just myself, except evenings/weekends.

My car is about a month an a half old.

Commuting to work I've been getting around 42-43 (35.5-36US MPG). On a long highway trip I took I averaged around 48.6 (40.5US). My peak so far was 53.3 (44.4US) over a 355km leg without much wind.

Some of the large differences you see in mileage could just be the difference between Imperial MPG and US MPG (we have bigger galons in Canada).

I love this car. I will be buying a 2005 in about 2 years. (They make excellent certified used cars with good warranties, decent price, gas milage and reliability to boot.)

Here is an update on my Echo fuel economy. There was a fairly large drop in fuel economy during the winter. As it got colder I noticed it would take longer and longer for the blue temp light to go out, which meant staying in 3rd longer than when its warmer. The cold and winter tires would have also affected the fuel economy. It was a fairly mild winter, so I expect to see a larger drop next year.

Most of my driving is still on the freeway, about 40km per day.

Total Overall Fuel Economy
Distance: 13,404km
Fuel: 889L
L/100k: 6.632
IMP MPG: 42.59
US MPG: 35.46

Winter Fuel Economy (Dec-Mar)
L/100k: 7.491
IMP MPG: 37.71
US MPG: 31.40

Warm Weather Fuel Economy (July-Oct)
L/100k: 6.111
IMP MPG: 46.22
US MPG: 38.49
