Sound of Silence

We have a 2000 Echo, and are having some funky electrical problems (I think).
The radio turns on, but there is no sound whatsoever. Also seems to be a drain on the battery. I have checked the fuses, and the wiring behind the stereo seems to be okay.
Has anyone had this problem before??

Thanks in advance!

I have a similar problem in my 2000 Echo Sedan. Yesterday afternoon it worked, and that same evening it stopped. Nothing changed with my car (parked in the garage), and now weather the radio is on or off, i get an audioble POP sound when i use anything that pulls an electrical current, other than the dome lite. Everything else seems to be working fine in the vehicle, and no fuses have been tripped. Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks

Check your speaker wires in your trunk . I had this same thing happen with my 2001 echo. Radio would turn on but no sound.
What the problem was the wire connectors on the rear speakers had gotten broke and where touching each other .Causing no sound to come from the radio. I sperated the wires taped them and all has been fine since.

Figure from putting stuff into the trunk must have gotten to close to the speakers and broke the tabs that the wires connect to

Yes, it is a stock radio, and all the connections have been reseated. I will check the speaker wires in the trunk today and see what I can find.

OMW to work to day, I tried turning it on and it worked, then I signaled a turn and it still worked, then I applied the brake and it stopped I think it may be possessed

Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but I have the same problem with my 2001 Echo.

I must have broken the wires from putting my bike in the trunk repeatedly and I eventually noticed that I didn't have sound coming from them. So I screwed with the wires and then my battery started draining and I bought a new battery (probably needed one anyway), but it kept draining.

Tonight I checked with my multimeter and saw a 2A draw that disappears with I pull the dome fuse. I also saw some sparks as I ripped the wires away to tape them up.

So I guess I can drive the car, but I would really like sound to come out of the front speakers since I only really drive when I have a 4-6 hour trip. Driving that far without the radio sucks. I can do it, but I would prefer not to.

How can I fix this? I tried to take out the rear speaker completely to trace the wire to see if there was another short, but I couldn't get the plastic cover off and I didn't want to break it.
