PO171 2000 Echo

Hi-

I have a 2000 Echo; the check engine light had come on recently, so I had a local shop do a diagnostic. The result was code PO171 (leak in the induction system). While this particular shop can perform some diagnostic repairs, they said that they did not have the 'smoke' testing equipment to proceed. They recommended the dealer...

Is anyone familiar with this problem, can it be fixed at home, and does anybody know how much I'm gonna get shafted taking it to the dealer?

Just a couple of other things:

Is it difficult to change the belt, and what's the best method?
Is it difficult to change the plugs, and what's the best method?

P0171 is a lean mixture code.
Common problem on echo's. Cleaning(works sometimes) or replacing the MAF sensor is the common solution. Toyota even has an updated part # for it. part#22204-0D030. But be sure to check for vac. leaks. Normal intake manifold vac should be 17-23"hg.
