The rubber band idea wouldn't be a bad one if we could find a nice black or clear band or even a belt that would fit tightly and be thin and wide, say 1/4" wide or so. If it was tight enough, it wouldn't slip and you could position it. I'd even consider glueing it if it worked out well enough.

I've just never been in a car before that had no texture on the controls.

I may do some searching in a hobby store and/or sewing machine store for tiny belts that might work.
