This problem exists in many V6 cars apparently, including the Maxima and Altima. I've emailed a few companys on whether they'd be willing to create a new mandrel bent y-pipe for us anyways though.
I've been planning on this mod since last year, but decided on switching up the muffler instead... hopefully i'll be able to get to it this spring or summer.

and they are equal length, that's why they have a u-bend on one of the pipes before they meet, but yes, it's there to control back pressure
