pretty much all the v6's out there even from many years ago have had this problem, starting from and including the gen3 camrys and the maximas from the same years as well
it was teh maxima guys who started the custom y-pipe thing it seems and then the camry guys also got into it- the only down side was that since so few camry guys were willing to pay to get performance, it was extremely expensive. In toronto, there was on shop that made a proper y-pipe for the camry and that was Ultimate Racing, and they only made 3 at a cost of about 800CND each at the time (8 years ago?). I was lucky enough to snag one used from Ratko when he parted out his car years ago. But yes, the y-pipe is hard to design properly because for best performance, the runners have to be equal length to prevent turbulence and a longer collector prevents the loss of torque.
