Have you tried skipping a tooth on your distributor one way or the other. Not that hard to do but it is easy to skip more than one. Best way is to do it really slow. twist the rotor slowly back and for and you will feel when it come free. turn it slowly one way or the other depending on if you need to advance or retard the the timing. That should get you in the range you need.

superclos1,

There is the possibility that you have a worn timing chain and worn guide. This is a common problem with the 22r. This can cause the timing chain to jump timing and cause the problem you are having. If you don't know when the timing chain was replaced I would take a look at it to make sure there is not any wear going on in there. It can when loose cut through the timing cover and cause more problems. Oil leaks/fail etc.

Superclos1,

So you had the head off. Lets go back to what Wilscojeff said. Put your engine at top dead center and check to see where the distributor is pointing. And if you don't have enough slot to adjust to point to #1 cylinder then your distributor is off by a tooth or so. You basically want to have the rotor point too #1 with enough slot on each side of the lock down bolt to adjust the timing.
