Check engine light 1988 22rec

I thought I would post here before using my ODB1 code reader. So I have an 88 4 runner with a new engine. I am at the 800 mi. mark on the new motor at about 500 mi. my check engine light started coming on after 15 to 30 min. of driving. I can shut the key off and turn it back on and the light clears....So my code reader manual says as soon as I turn the key on the check engine light should illuminate but it doesnt, it only lights up after the truck has been running for awhile. Anyone have any experience with this? any thoughts on what the chek engine light might be for? My runner seems to be running just fine

You don't really need a reader, you just jumper 2 terminals in the test connector in the engine bay, turn the Ign Sw to ON, and count the CEL flashes.

The exact details are in one of the sticky posts in either the 89+ or 88- truck forums.
