Gen1 1988 SR5 4Runner-Where is the plug to jump to get codes located?? V6

I've looked it up in my book, but still can not seem to find where my code reader plug is located?? My 4Runner is GEN#1 "1988 SR5 V6"..
The check engine light has just come on in the last few days, I replaced engine 9-2009 with a reman. Has ran great ever since, however seems to take more turning over time to start?? And now the check engine light?? Still runs like a champ, but I need to get codes to figure out whats going on...
I have looked at past posts for the 4runners but am unable to find any telling where the 1988 V6 version may be located...... Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am stumped Thanks for any help....

An 88 is OBD-I, so there is no place to plug a code reader into.
To read the codes, you count the number of flashes of the CEL, after you first short the T and E1 terminals of the connector adjacent to the engine bay fuse box.
Complete info should be in one of the posts "stickied" at the top of the main page.

palmtree,

As for the fuel filter you now will need vise grips to remove the nut. In the future you should do youself a favor and buy a 14mm "b" nut wrench. It has a slot cut in it just slightly bigger than the line and holds the nut much better than an ordinary open ended wrench. I would go after the code 22 first. You must have a bad temp sensor which might giving the Engine Control Module the wrong starting info.
Check out this link for more info on your rig.

That's also known as a flare nut or line wrench

jetwhine and fourwd1,
Thank you both for the Great info... Vise Grips worked!! Also used a bit of Liquid Wrench first....... 14mm"B" Wrench is also now in tool box ..
With the fuel filter done, am now going to try and go after the code 22 temp sensor.. The temp guage on my guage cluster works just fine, starts cold and slowly goes up in temp as I drive though?? Truck runs great, except for the having to keep trying to turn her over and over to start if it has'nt been run in hrs....Restarts just fine if driven and stopped and restarted??.... but will go out and trace down the sensor and wires?? Any way I can check sensor??
Thank you 2 all that can help with any info........

palmtree,

That is what the engine coolant temp sensor does. It tells the engine computer if it is in the cold or hot range. There is another sensor that just sends temp info the the temp gauge in the gauge cluster. Different animal. The ECT sensor is the one that needs to be changed. It also sends a temp to the cold start circuit which is a fuel injection choke that aids starting cold. If the sensor has gone south you no longer have a cold start circuit being used to start the engine, thus a hard starter but once warm it will start great!

Again Thank you jetwhine,

The ECT sensor on the V-6 (3VZE) is located?? The book I am looking at tells me a coolant temp sensor is in the back of the intake on the right(drivers side) first one foward.... Would this be my ECT or the sensor that sends temp to my guage?? I have looked at it in the 4runner and have checked that the connection is attatched, it is the one with a prong sticking up that the connector slides over and not a snap on connector like the one next to it(more towards pass side)???? Where might the other one be for sending to the guage cluster?? Thanks for any and all help........... Toyotanation.com ROCKS!!! You guys are so helpfull!!!!!!

palmtree,

Yes that is the one in the back of the motor. The other is located on the water housing in front of the motor. The one in the back is the one that would be suspect. The book should give you a picture of it. I would just replace it.
