Auto or manual?

I am looking at buying a 1st generation 4 runner. I am looking at 2 options, one manual and 1 automatic. Ideally I would want the manual, but the automatic only has half the miles on it and is generally in better shape. Prices are comparable. I now own a 2nd generation 4runner with a v6 engine, automatic, which I am selling due to very poor gas mileage and slow acceleration (I live in a mountainous area and have to be able to pass trucks going uphill), not sure which 2 get. Main question, is performance (acceleration) of the automatic much poorer than the manual?

If you are looking at the 4 cylinder then you will not be impressed with either gas milage or power. Unless maybe if it is a turbo charged engine. I would say that the manual would be the best for the power that you can get out of the 4 cylinder. You will not improve the gas milage no matter what you get. The 4runner is a heavy rig and gas milage is not in your favor. If you are looking for gas milage then you need to look for something else. I would recomend a camry good power and good gas milage unfortunatly not four wheel drive.
