ct20 turbo getting red hot..HELP!!!

First off let me say, it's good to be here and glad to find this place.

I've had this turbo for atleast 5 years, the engine was rebuilt 3 years ago. I took all the emissions off several years back. Few months ago I rebuilt the turbo due to it pushing oil into the intake. After the turbo rebuild it has ran better than it ever has. Spools up fast and runs better.

I've found it getting light orange even after very light use. Last night after I got home it was bright orange as was the exhaust manifold. This was after a slow drive home for the final 2 miles just to help cool it down. It was hot enough I left it outside with the hood open because I was worried about it catching fire.

Any help would be great.

I guess some things to check are the water lines to turbo. Any possible restrictions in the exhaust system(cat if you still have one) and ignition timing.

timing is dead on. Exhaust has no restrictions and the high heat is coming only from the exhaust side of the turbo. The part that houses the bearings (where the water flows) isn't getting hot. It still has the $.99 paint on it.

Hhhmmm?
The only other possibility I can think of is exhaust valve clearance.

You're probably running rich, could be a bad O2 sensor, etc.
Have you checked for any CEL codes?

no codes at all. I will check the O2 sensor. The spark plugs look great. This would be a lot easier if the truck ran poorly.

I did find the plug for the air valve had come loose. What does the air valve do?
