need to know if the fuel pump supposed to come on when key is in start position or in the run position right now it only pumps with key in the start position, and it continues to run but it loses prime and was wondering if i could wire the pump to the ignition so it comes on like newer models do when the key is in the run position or not any info is greatley appreciated

sldghmmr,

You might have a circuit opening relay gone bad. What happens is the start position holds the pump relay inergized while in the start position. Then once the engine is started there is a switch in the mass air flow meter that holds the same portion of the circuit opening relay which controls the pump when the engine is running. "The run position". There are 2 circuits in the relay. One circuit has an electromagnet the holds the pump on during start. The other circuit has an electromagnet that holds the pump on when the car is running and is activated by the switch in the mass air flow meter. It is not usually the mass air flow switch. I would look at the circuit opening relay first. If you can get a hold of a used relay you might just swap it and see if it will run right.
So to answer your question now. If your engine is not running, when you put your key to the run position your pump will not be running.
Now you can short the FP and +B on your diagnostic port and start your rig and see if it stays running. if it does then that would be about 90% sure that the circuit opening relay is not working correctly.
I hope you can understand all of this. I tried to make it as simple as I can for you.
