84 Carburetors...

My dad has an 84 4-runner that has been a complete nightmare for us. 3 engine rebuilds later (in one year, don't ask) and she's finally back in one piece, but now I am finding out that it has the Federal version of the carburetor, and not the California version.

Is there a way to convert the Federal carb to meet California emissions standards? It has already failed smog once, and since then I have pieced in California vacuum components and have re-done all of the vacuum lines as per the California diagrams, or at least as best as I could.

It has a CALIF. labeled emissions control box, and I believe the harness to be the California version. It's as if someone threw in engine components from different sources. We aren't sure if it actually passed SMOG when we bought it last year, or if the guy paid off someone to pass it.

Any ideas? Should I just be looking for a California carb? Preferably the LEAST expensive route, as we have already dumped over a thousand bucks into this thing in the past 5-6 months, and we don't really have any more money to spend on it.

Thanks.

If the Emission Control Module is Cali the entire system should be, the Cali and Fed ECM's are not interchangeable, so someone could not have just plugged it in place of a Fed unit.

What makes you/them think the carb is not "Cali" standard??

It has more places for vacuum connections than what the California Vacuum diagram calls for.

Also, the box is California, as is the entire wiring harness. The PO wired up the entire connector wrong though, so now I am looking for that connector that plugs into the emission control box, if you know where I can get the plug and metal pins... I know it was re-wired because all of the connectors are soldered, rather than crimped.

Honestly, I am not sure how the truck runs as good as it does with the way this thing is wired. I am almost thinking about just running it down to the smog shop and seeing if it will pass.

Sounds like a plan.
