Ready to blow it up

Frustrated beyond belief right now, about to strip the tires off, put them on my JEEP, and then set this pile of crap on fire.

OVERHEATING, as it has been since the rebuild. First we thought it was the EGR. So we replaced the EGR, as it wasn't functioning right. Didn't solve the issue. Put a new modulator on, didn't fix it. Tried 2 different fan clutches, flushed the radiator, made SURE the water pump has been working, and about the only thing we haven't done is put the fan shroud back on, but I CAN'T see that as being the entire reason this thing overheats into the RED.

The only time it overheats is when at speed, 50mph and above, so it absolutely cannot be the temperature controlled fans which disengage when the air temp drops from the cool air rushing in.

It's an 84 22R with carb. Ideas?

Xpress,

You might want to try a new thermostat. It is not uncommon to get a bad one from new. It sounds like it is not opening far enough and is ok for low flow but when high flow is needed at speed it might not be open far enough.

believe it of not the shroud does make a difference, and it could be a pretty big one at that. i would put the shroud back on it and see if that fixes it, and if not try replacing the t-stat (the only thing that i didnt see on your list).

Dans86 is right about the shroud.

It's also possible something was done wrong in the rebuild. I've seen a wrong gasket or even the correct one installed wrong block a water passage causing overheating.
