severe hesitation apon accelleration/ no power

I have a 1988 4runner 22re sr5, it has 470 500 km on it and has had 2 engine rebuilds. the truck has been sitting for about 6 years but was started and idled once a month for about an hour. i started to work on it more but then suddenly the truck wouldnt idle, it would start but die shortly after. i found the gas was varnished and thought it was simply not firing, after draining the gas no change had occured. over the period of 2 years i have been doing research and changing different parts. eventually it would idle after changing o2 sensor, distributer cap and trying to start it to get things moving. i replaced the map sensor with one i found at a scrap yard, then changed the injectors, fuel filter, fuel regulator, distributer wires, o2 sensor (second time). i did had very low compression but after spraying rust breaker into the cylinders to release the rings compression was back up to 160-165 psi in all cylinders. black smoke was being emitted which indicated a fuel to air problem, the vacuum lines are all in place and are new hoses, when i drove it around the yard it bogged out but eventually got slightly more responsive however still lots of black smoke. i ended up replacing the "new" map sensor with the original and suddenly all my problems went away. i passed aircare the next day and drove around putting about 180 km on it that day. after letting it sit i tried starting it again, turned over about 30 times before starting and runs like a pig again with no power, barely have enough to get moving on flat ground. now, power comes back and goes away, one minute it works good the next it bogs out but there isnt black smoke anymore and so far i have not gotten any power since that day. the check engine light is on and goes off when power comes back. the truck does have a header with a 2.25" od pipe, that is the only engine modification. any ideas?
thanks

un plug the air meter and start it up. if it fires up and runs good for a second then shuts off its probably the air meter. the thing on thr air filter box. I had that problem and the air meter was bad.

Since the Check Engine Light comes on, why not pull the code to see what is triggering it?
That could point you towards the problem.
