I should have specified, but you probably understood to begin with, that the movement I was referring to would be the driveshaft turning after the car is running and put into gear. If there were a snapped u-joint behind the driveshaft then the the driveshaft would spin when the transmission was in gear with the engine running. If there was a broken u-joint between the driveshaft and transmission then you could get right under the transmission and witness the transmission output shaft turning but the driveshaft not. I suppose another check would be to try to spin the driveshaft by hand with the engine off and the transmission alternately in park and in neutral and the rear wheels off the ground. If you can spin the wheels by turning the driveshaft with the transmission in neutral, then you know there is nothing preventing motion from the driveshaft back, and if you can STILL do so with the transmission in park, then you know your problem is within the transmission.
