Figured it out:
Once you've successfully gotten through step 8.a, then:
a) depress BOTH Lock and Unlock buttons for one second, release
b) depress BOTH Lock and Unlock buttons for three seconds (you'll hear the door lock lock-unlock ONCE)
c) depress Unlock button for three seconds
d) shut car door to end procedure
Addendum: if the code won't take, then repeat steps a) and b), but on c) depress Lock button for three seconds [I stumbled on this success by accident, and am only positive of my first two steps]
