USA 92 4runner V6 no power can not adjust idle

Ok we just got this 4runner it ran good for about a week now it surges at idle sounds like it going to dye plugs,cap and roder, fuel filter are new air filter is clean timing is at 8 at 800 rpms 10 when jumped have not pulled codes yet will bring scaner home tommorrow night i can adjust idle down but not up has a gasy smell coming out of the tail pipe ran propane torch around all lines also checked with either no rpm rising just really dont know where to go pulled codes had a 12 code but that my bad checked compration cleared codes did nit come back

I had a similar problem after head gasket replacement. It turns out my timing was off a tooth. I don't know that that's issue. Mine also idled very low, and you didn't mention that.
Could be you jumped time?

bterman,

You might have a engine coolant sensor going bad. That will cause a bad idle. Does this happen after engine is warm, or does it do it from cold?
