90 4Runner Gears

Hey i have a 90 4cyl 4Runner that came with stock 4.10 gears. I have been wanting to upgrade them for a while. I recently found a great deal on some A040 gears from a 98 4Runner. I believe that that code is for the 4.56 gear correct me if i'm wrong. I would love to swap these into my truck if they will fit. Does anyone know if the gears are swappable between a 98 and a 90. Thanks

From Erik's site:

'86-95 4cyl Turbo and V6* trucks and 4runners, and ALL '96+ 4Runners use the Toyota 8" 4-pinion differential in the rear.

'95-03 Tacoma, '00-04 Tundra, ?? Sequoia's, and 96-02 4Runners have a high-pinion 7.5" IFS front diff offset to the drivers side. The high-pinion design is used so that the rack and pinion steering and anti-sway bar on these vehicles can run under the front driveshaft. The housing is a unique bolt-together design. The carrier inside is exactly the same as the '86-95 IFS diffs, so LSD's and lockers for it are also the same. However, since this is a high-pinion diff, the gears for it are different (reverse-cut) than the earlier diff.

So the rear would work but, someone correct me if I'm wrong, since the gears in the front are reverse cut you're hosed. I may be nabbbing another auto SR5 V6 this coming Wednesday so I'll check the door sticker, it might have 4.56 3rds as my '91 V6 did. If it does and you can wait till spring I'll hold them for you.

edit: If the reverse cut means the same as high pinion, as I understand with high pinion diffs you're running on the coast side of the ring gear. Not good for longevity as this tends to grenade them when you run on the coast side for extended periods (think rear diff). Front diff would not be as bad though, I think it's generally safe to run a high pinion in the front.

The reverse cut used in the high pinion diff runs on the drive side. That's what they're for.

I stand corrected then. Perhaps I'm thinking of the low pinion...
