Intermittent o/d shifting out of od

1990 4runner 4x4 brought into transmission shop for this problem they soldered e17splice didnt fix problem, driving along fine and drops out of overdrive for no apparent reason. I have read in these articles that it could possibly be a thermostat problem. Personally i beleive it to be a speed sensor has anyone encountered this problem, they also got code 42 when they did diagnostic. they tell me there is two sensors one in the speedo and one on the transmission and the code is calling for sensor #1 which is which and they also say that the one in the tranny is the back up and if one is working no need to change the other...is this right... and if not which one should i change because this problem seems to keep returning and I have to drive 500km in the next day all highway and cant do it without od....any help would be greatly appreciated....

I can't remember which is which, but I will. In the meantime, the shop is wrong. One is not a backup for the other. One (in the combo meter) is for the EFI and the other (in trans) is for the ECT. The ECM controls both EFI and ECT.

Since you have a trans problem it would likely be the trans sensor, but not absolutely.
Could possibly be the O/D solenoid.
