Reliability of the V6

I know that Toyota has gold with their bulletproof 22R 4 cylinder and other engines. What about their 6 cylinder engines? What are some issues that you have had in the past or are having in the present and what are common issues with Toyota 6 cylinder engines?

Sludge and/or Headgaskets for the V-6 especially the 3.0 liter ones. Not such an issue with their near bulletproof Inline 6 which is just about in the same league as the 22r.

Rock,

The Older 3.0L v6 has had issues with the head gaskets due to heat and expansion of the aluminum head and the cast block. The heat issue is with the crossover pipe at the back of the motor. The best 2 fixes are:
1) New head gaskets and resurfaced head and block to near zero flat .
2) Headers that eliminate the crossover pipe in the back of the motor.

The newer 3.4L v6 is a much more hardier motor. The first couple of years had a few issues with the head gasket but the newer ones are moe better.

So, in the long run, for the V6, what years would you recommend as being worth my time?

The 3.4 came out in 96, the 1st few years had some problems, I think they worked out the problems around 98-99, IIRC.
