Hello all, I've got a 91 4Runner (22RE automatic) that I bought for a winter beater. However I have one small problem... I drive on a highway to work and the truck doesn't want to go over 80km/h. It accellerates ok from a stop, but as the speed gets higher, the power decreases. The truck also seems to have issues shifting, for example in the higher gears it won't shift unless I let off the gas, it will just sit at 3500rpm and stay there. It has NO guts going uphill, I'll start going up a hill doing 80 and be crawling at 50 by the time I reach the top, and when I try to accellerate on the highway it feels like the truck tries to accellerate in high gear and then goes "ah screw it" and downshifts into (I think?) 2nd gear and revs like crazy but goes nowhere.
Help? I think it's either a compression leak or something wrong with the tranny, I'm going to test the compression as soon as I find my tester, but until then I was wondering if anyone else had any input as to what else this might be.
***EDIT*** I tested the compression, and the engine has 140psi/cyl 1, 150psi/cyl 2 and 3, 130psi/cyl 4. So it's not the compression. Next step is removing the catiletic converter.

The shifting problems aside, you're describing the exact symptoms of a clogged cat conv.
Funny you say that, I've had two other people suggest the same thing. But when I test drove the truck it had only a resonator on the exhaust, no catiletic. And it felt just as sluggish as it does now. But I might just try taking the cat off and seeing what happens. Can't hurt.
Didn't you just say that it did not have a cat on it???? Why must you remove a cat if it does not have one on it? If you just have a muffler on it then, it must be clogged.

It didn't have one on it when I test drove it, after I bought it I installed the original exhaust with cat and muffler.
Hum? Maybe that was why it was removed because there where problems with it????? How did it run before re-installing the exhaust system? Now you must remember the 22r engine is a bit under powered in the first place so having gobbs of power is not its M.O.

I remember it running pretty much the same, but I never took it over 80 when I test drove it. But at that time it only had a resonator on it, which doesn't do much for back-pressure, so maybe that's why it was sluggish then. And yeah I know the 4 cylinders don't have much power, but I'd at least expect the poor truck to do 100km/h on the highway without too much trouble. Going uphill it struggles to hold 80. I'm gonna remove the cat this weekend, where I live e-tests aren't required.
How many miles on it? Like you said check the compression. Whats the fluid look like in your trans? smell burnt? Have you changed the trans fluid and filter. Has trans temp light gone on? Any engine codes? If you put a new cat on it ,wont be glogged in this short a time ,and you loose almost no horspower with a good cat.

It's got 271 000 km on it, and I checked the compression it's fine. I just flushed the transmission fluid but haven't changed the filter yet, before I drop the pan I want to see if the shifting problems are being caused by a sensor accessible from the pan. I've come to the conclusion that it's slipping out of third gear at higher speeds, it'll hold third for about half a second before going straight into fourth.
No lights have come on, and the engine light isn't on but I will check for any stored codes. And the cat isn't new, the guy gave me a used exhaust so I have no idea how old the cat is, I'm going to assume it's the original cat.
My question now is are there any sensors accessible by removing the tranny pan and if so which ones? It feels like some sort of shift sensor might be gone because the truck won't let me accellerate in fourth gear, as soon as I press the gas pedal more than about halfway it just downshifts without needing to.
Well thank you very much for your input everyone, it was indeed the catiletic converter. Took it off tonight and she runs like a dream. Still got some shifting issues but they're a million times better and tolerable now.
