What would be the common reasons for my 4-wheel drive not working?

irishjay,

Split vacuum lines. You can try swapping the engage side with the disengage side and see if it will engage. This will tell you a couple of things. 1) If it engages when swapped then you either have a bad vacuum line or 2) a bad VSV. If you can't figure out which vacuum lines they are, at the back of your front diff, you will find the ADD which will have 2 vacuum lines attached. Follow those back up the side of the engine and you will see where they plug in. Swap them there and try to see if it will engage. If it does not then you might have a bad push button switch.
Hope this helps.
