Wink 4 Runner flooding after sitting

I have an issue sometimes, in hot weather. 4 Runner runs great, its a manual transmission, V6 engine. Now that it is above 96 degrees here in Arizona, after driving awhile, and I shut off vehicle in a parking lot, I go into a store. I come out in 5-10 minutes, and try and start. Blue smoke comes out tailpipe, I smell a little gas. It acts like its flooded. If I don't depress gas pedal, it will likely start after cranking the starter maybe 10 times. But if I push gas pedal, it acts like its flooding. Once I get it running, it is fine.
In Cold weather, starts fine but within 5 minutes while I'm driving it may stall at a stop light unexpededly.

While driving freeways & around town, no issues. Fuel filter has been changed. Is this a cold start circuit issue?

tonyisme,

I would check into the cold start system. Have you checked for any stored codes in the ECM? There is the ECT (engine coolant temp sensor) that may be at fault. It sends signals to the ECM to tell the system that it is either hot or cold. Or you might have a cold start timer problem.

This engine coolant teperature sensor, does it have a part number, and where on wngine would it be located? Also, do you think I should get one from Toyota or would one from NAPA suffice? A Mechanic is telling me it might be fuel pump, but its the original fuel pump. This has been happening for at least a couple of years, and especially when the desert temps hit 96 degrees and above.

tonyisme,

My dealings with fuel pumps has been either they work or they don't. If they have been intermittent/quit then there would be a code in the ECU for a fuel pump.
The temp sensor is located on the back side of the motor as looking into the engine compartment from the front on the right hand side. It will have a green wire with a light green stripe and a brown wire with a black stripe on it. If you can afford a Toyota sensor that is what I would buy, but you have to do what your pocket book dictates.

Thanks for the help,
So is this where the ECT (engine coolant temp sensor) is ? On back of engine?
I have access to a Fluke Multimeter w/ Ohms. Will I need to disconnect an coolant hoses to get to this? Mine is 1990 w. Manual Trans & AC unit. Also I was smart enough to buy the orange shop manuals back in the mid 1990s so maybe they will come in useful...

tonyisme,

Yes the OEM is the only way to go. There is a wealth of info in them. And no you don't have to remove hoses to get at the plug. It has a brown wire with a black stripe and a green wire with a light green stripe on it. Yes it is at the back of the motor close to the fire wall. There are several sensors back there.
