Flooding?

Hi,

I have a 1990 4runner automatic with the 3.0 EFI engine. It always starts strong in the mornings and will run fine for a while. But occasionally, usually when I give it gas while cruising or come to a stop sign, it will stall. It acts and smells as though its flooded. After I let it sit for 15 - 20 minutes it will usually start right back up. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Yes it does but it's always associated with me giving it a good pump of gas; coming around a corner, starting an incline of a hill, changing speed zones, etc and it always does a quick hiccup right before stalling out.

Alpha80808,

I'm thinking that maybe you should short out with a paperclip B+ and FP in the diagnostics port and drive it around and see if it makes any difference.

Alpha80808,

What that will do is bypass all switches that control the fuel pump and turn it on continuously, to see if it is a switch problem or something else. If it stalls with this configuration then those 2 switches will be eliminated. There is one switch in the MAF and one in the circuit opening relay.
If this stall is from an intermittant electrical problem then you would be rich because the fuel will not burn with out fire. So you need to try to figure out if it is a fuel problem or electrical. It could even be a bad key switch.
