ignition timing off.

I just replacex the timing belt and distributor on my 3.0l V6 now the ignition timing is way off. It shouldbe at 10 degrees btdc at idle but only reaches that under a load. Its idling at 750 rpm and when I move the distributor it stalls. Can anyone help me?

naterides,

Did you short the pins T1 and TE1 to check your timing? Other wise you won't get the right reading. And if you did, you might be off by one tooth on the timing belt, or you did not instal the distributor right.

I did short the 2 terminals, and I know the timing belt is bang on when I first got it back together it wouldn't start and I had to take it apart again. When I put the distributor in I set the engine at top dead center and positioned the rotor with the #1 connector on the cap, should it be offset from the # 1?
