Hey Everyone. I own a 1993 4Runner, and I have a problem with it. I was wondering if anyone else has come across this?
What happens is this. When I am driving the speedometer stops working. Then the revs change, and all of a sudden it loses all power, and it seems like it is coasting. I press the gas pedal, and nothing happens. It crawls along going approximately 10km/h (estimated). There are no warning lights going on.
I hope someone has some information on this. Thanks for your help.
Engine still runs. Has no power. No matter how much I push the gas pedal, it gains no speed at all. IF the speedometer starts working again, then it runs OK again.

Thank you for all your replies.
wow... that is honestly the weirdest thing ive ever heard of... i'd start with checking all the grounds... like, ALL of them... who knows... strange things happen with bad grounds...
does the engine rev up when you give it throttle?
is it an automatic?
does it make any weird clunking or grinding sounds when it happens?
are there any signs that its going to happen, or is it just a random?

It happens almost as soon as the Engine warms up (doesn't seem to do it when it's cold). The Engine revs up when I give it throttle, but it gains no speed. It is an automatic transmission. There is no warning when it happens, other than the speedometer quits working, then it happens right away. Then the vehicle slows down as it seems the drivetrain isn't getting the necessary power to keep going. There is no clunking or grinding when it happens.
I have heard that it could be a problem with the speedo sensor, but not really sure. Ranging from poor connection to being dirty. We are going to try cleaning it, and trying it again to see if it happens, but we are honestly at a loss as to why this is happening. Unfortunately, if it does turn out to be the speedo sensor, and it absolutely needs to be replaced, the 4Runner isn't worth replacing this sensor, as we have got a price on a new sensor of $450.

i have a sensor. its from my 94 4runner with a 4.88 gearset, but ill send it to ya for cheap if you need it.
honestly, unless your transmission is shifting when the speedo goes wonky, you shoudlnt lose power... the drivetrain is all mechanically linked... i'd bet something in the transmission electronics is cattywompus... or its the speed sensor, causing the trans to shift out of gear or something... have you tried shifting gears when it happens? like drop it into 1st or something?

Hey golana. Thanks for your reply. Yea, it does seem like the speedo sensor is causing the tranny to shift out of gear. It's like it goes into neutral. I did drop it a gear to see if that would work, and it stayed the same, like it was stuck in neutral.
I would be interested in your speedo sensor, depending on how much you want for it, so let me know.
