Need help adjusting the timing

I am trying to adjust the timing to the stock of 10degrees btdc. My problem is that the notch doesn't come close to the timing plate. its far before the plate about a half an inch. Adjusting the timing moves the notch further away from the timing plate. Can someone help me get the notch lined up?

abedog91,

Did you short the TE! and E1 in your diagnostic port?

Actually I didn't, I didn't see that step in the repair manual but I will look again. Not sure what this does or even how to do it, any pictures of what you are talking about?

abedog91,

It turns off the electronic advance of the distributor. Your distributor might be off a tooth or maybe your electronic advance is not working properly.

Alright, I have been researching this and to attempt to fix this I believe I must bring the engine to top dead center and then remove the distributor to change teeth?? ...not exactly sure how to change teeth but so far thats what I have read the process is... does that sound correct?

abedog91,

Yes make sure that you are on tdc before making any changes. To verify this make sure that the rotor on the dizzy is pointing somewhat to #1 spark position. Then once you have that then try to get it as close to #1 as possible by pulling it out and putting it back in. You will see what happens to it if you do it wrong, it will point somewhere else other than where it should be at #1. Mark #1 on the dizzy before you start so you won't forget which one it is. Hope this helps.

Alright, sounds simple enough. Turns out we need a power brake booster as well so as soon as I do replace that I will be attempting to fix the timing and I will post here with the end result or if I need anything clarified... thanks for the help so far jet.
