Fuel Economy – What is the most efficient speed??

Hi, i have a 2nd Gen 4Runner (1992) and im getting about 6km/s per 1Litre of petrol (about 16 miles per 1 Gallon). I don't drive it hard, but it does use a lot of gas

and I was wondiering,
1. if its possible to get better fuel economy?
2. what is the optimum speed/ most efficient speed on the highway?

First, what engine do you have ?
Second, there are things you can do to help improve your mpg.
Basics like correct tire pressure, a complete tune-up, take it easy on the accel pedal, etc.
As for optimum speed for best mpg, you'll have to experiment to figure out what's best for your vehicle/conditions/etc.

Exclamation MPG / KPL - fuel efficency - optimum cruising speed for v6 Engine

Hi fourwd1,

I have a SR5 3.0L V6 engine with Manual transmission. I run the tires on 32-34PSI (2.2Bar/ 220kpm - 2.3Bar/ 234kpm) and I'm not heavy on the gas. If experimented with regular and premium as well as premium while adding injector cleaner. Nothing seems to give me better mileage.

I had planned on giving it a full tune-up, however, before the previous owner sold it to me, they had it fully serviced for rego, and that was only about 6weeks ago! so it should be pretty spot-on!

With best mpg.. surely there must be an optimum cruising speed for the 4Runners? ie, i can understand how high winds, rain, or a heavy load would impede the results, but on a normal, cloud-free, no cargo/load day, I would imagine the best mpg would be achieved at around 90-100km/h? (56-62miles/hour) There must be an optimum cruising speed for the engine? - Does anyone else have info on this subject?

Let me know your thoughts fourwd1,

Thanks

Ben

Ben,

I have 1992 4Runner 3.0 automatic and find that 60 mph at 2,500 rpms (in overdrive) with proper tune up and tires (31x10.5x15) correctly inflated gives me the best mileage. That is with regular gas (87 oct.). Windows, sunroof closed and no AC on. Once you put the AC on, you mpg drops off some.

JJGN,

Thanks for the info. What MPG as a rough estimate are you getting?

Cheers

Ben

According to fuel ratings for the 3.0 4Runner of that generation, 16 MPG is about right. The 2.4L 22-RE 4 cylinder engine with the 5 speed manual is the most fuel efficient of all 4Runners. It gets an average of 20 MPG, which is what I get from mine.
