Click then nothing when starting

I have a 94 toyota 4 runner with the 3vz engine and manual transmission. Recently when i go to start the car a rather loud click is heard but the car doesn't start. When i try again it usually starts but some times it takes a couple tries. Im pretty sure its the starter but why does it normally start the second time? any tips? this has been going on for roughly two months.

Thank you very much.

Rebootej,

Sounds like you need a new starter.

Yup. Mine had exactly the same symptoms. It got progressively worse, and after about four months, it would take 10 to 15 attempts before it would start. It finally gave up and a new starter fixed it.

if you have not yet replaced the starter, and you get stuck somewhere and it will not start, you can get some type of hammer or ppe or something and tap on the starter and it will usually start again.
