Hey so I'm going to be doing some work on my truck soon, looking to find some more information about what has been done and works. Looking for a gain in horsepower and torque. I'm looking and the generic intake (10-20hp), exhaust (5-15hp), i was looking into cams too (0-10hp) but not sure what to put in it, and lastly that i've looked at has been chips but the problem is what chip? http://www.performancechipsdirect.com/Toyota/4-Runner/ is a looking legit place to get one. Other places claim a 75hp gain. Not sure if anyone has put one on their rig, so any help would be great. Any other tips would be great, looking at doing a 4in lift with 33's and replacing the rear springs (little droopy). I'm not really looking for anything crazy since i would like to keep some decent mileage but i want some more power, gotta love the fine line between those haha! Thanks guys!
Either way, a "performance" chip isn't going to do much if anything, the EFI on both is pretty crude.
And a 75 HP gain is a ridiculous claim. The 22RE is around 106 HP and the 3VZ like 130.
If you want some legitimate ideas, check out Toyota engine experts like LC Engineering, DOA Racing, or engnbldr.com.
It's the 3vzfe motor. V6 DOHC. I figure it was pretty ridiculous claim, that's why I was curious if it was legit or what. The V6 puts out 160 stock for the V6 DOHC.
EDIT:
by the way looked into the chip, it's legit. (least seems legit) It says in conjunction with other mods it has been known to produce 65hp+, it has an adjustable setting for more horsepower, or better efficiency. It works be changing the factory settings but not exceeding factory limits. It seems safe and legit, still worth it for $70?

I don't see how that's supposed to help at all. I've heard of messing with the engine coolant temp sensor. But all that does is fatten the fuel trim, by tricking it into thinking it's cooler than it is.
The 3VZ-E is slow. It has piston stroke a mile long, so decent torque. I've got one, 31's and an auto. Tune it up right, and it's not bad.
Engine swap is another route. Swap in a 3.4 5VZ-E. There are actually performance parts available for those motors. Toyota had a supercharger from the factory on some T100's with it in. Personally that's the way I'd go. Or check out those companies fourwd1 told you about. I looked at some when I bought my Runner, just didn't have the funds.
Just my two cents. I'd hate to see you spend $70 for nothing.
@ZAchole, im looking at doing like a 4in lift and putting some 33's on her. Nothing crazy really. I've heard of the 3.4l swap but i've heard it requires a lift for the 2nd gen. I don't really have a problem with doing a motor swap outside of the fact that it's pretty spendy :/ however would it be cheaper to just grab a used motor from like a pull-apart and then build the motor from the ground up basically? I'm not really looking for any crazy powerful, just more then what I have, if that makes sense. The motor I have is rated for ~160hp and 140ftlbs. I'd like to see ~200-200+hp and ~180ftlbs. If i do the lift with 33's ill need more power for it. I saw a thread about the motor swap on here before but I couldn't find it again, any chance you can link a thread about the 3.4l swap?
Thanks guys!
I think your numbers might be off. The V6 in 2nd gen 4Runners is a 3VZ-E. The 3VZ-FE went in the camry's I believe. Don't quote me, but I think your motor's rated at 190ft lbs of torque. But like fourwd1 said, 130ish hp.
Is this going to be a daily driver, or just a toy? Because gearing can make a big difference in performance. But if it's your DD, you probably don't want to put a set of short gears in it. They'll kill your mileage.
Also: Not to knock toyotanation, but I think yotatech . com has a lot more information on building up your rig. I'll see I can you a PM of a 3.0 to 3.4 motor swap thread.
Isn't the 3VZ-E a SOHC though? Mine is a DOHC. So did someone do a motor swap already then? It's a DD, i want to make it a little more able on the off-roads, but being at college it makes ~300 mile trip home too so hence the whole nothing crazy idea. The gears are good but i didn't look into doing them seriously for the reason you gave; mileage.
