I have a 90 4wd with a very bad clunk noise, not consistently, when driving and in reverse, jacked up LR wheel (cause that is where it sounds like its comming from)and when turning a scraping noise is heard, tried to wobble wheel but no play, but i do have a rear pinion seal leak, gear oil level is not low(can feel oil in when put finger in fill hole)is this a bearing or hub problem or am i looking at a more serious problem with the 4wd..or gears in the diff...any suggestions or thoughts
[QUOTE=nevada;3776394]check the rear pinion. the nut may be loose.
does it make more noise when coasting in gear?[/QUOT
yes it makes more noise coasting, would a loose nut cause the clunk though. And when spinning the left rear wheel i could see play where the drive shaft goes into the dif exactly where it is leaking. nut seems to be tight

there is play at the pinion yoke?
you need to grab the DL and turn it back, and forth. if it moves IN/OUT then the pinion nut is loose.
and yes, if the pinion is loose it could cause a clunk.
here is another thread, sounds like the same thing..

Thanks so much this thread is exactly my problem, and yes the yoke is going in and out booked for the shop tomorrow with a cost of 150.lab and 14 for the seal, and of course gear oil.....i will let you know tomorrow if all is good..........Thanks again for your help, i like knowing what i am talking about when i go to a garage, too many think us women are stupid and take us for a ride....i like proving them wrong...lol

ok just back from the garage and think they are screwing me..yes the dl moves in and out and up and down...he is telling me its the rear pinion bearing is why my seal went..and i need a whole axle assy..also this leak happened in nov and i have been watching the drips and splatter carefully and only dime size drips maybe once a week one or two...and the level has never been any less than 1/2inch from the drain hole can touch it with my finger...so is this possible that this bearing took 4 months, this clunk just started one week ago...and have not driven it except to hear the noise it was making

take it to a different shop then.
altho...theres no way for us to know if the bearing is bad or not. but for SURE the pinion nut is loose.
it is possible the nut was loose long enough to damage the pinion bearing. but...that hasnt been my experience.
and, for the shop, that may be the "correct" repair.
if the pinion bearing was bad, there would be a constant sound from the rearend. a roaring, droning, jet engine sound. louder at high speeds. similar to a wheel bearing. you might not be able to hear this while the pinion nut is loose tho.
oh, and you wouldnt need a whole assembly. at worst it would need the rear 3rd rebuilt. maybe(probably) just a couple bearings. but, not the entire thing...

my hanes book shows one pinion gear(drive pinion) but when i called toyota to get price they are telling me there is two....any idea where to get a proper diagram on this rear end, it was suggested to me that i should get the nut tightened and seal replaced and see if that is the problem first before taking the diff apart to replace the pinion gear...is that a good suggestion...

there is 1 pinion nut per differential. so 1 in the back, and 1 in the front(if 4wd).
if you remove the 4 bolts holding the driveline to the yoke, and drop the Dline out of the way, you will see the pinion nut.
and yes, that is a good suggestion. the same thing i would suggest you do.
