Overdrive issues

I have a 1994 4runner and it has a hard time going into overdrive and staying there. I have checked the fluid and my thermostat is not bad. Could it be something as simple as a tranny service with a new filter and a sensor? Or something more complicated? I appreciate all the feed back. I can get than.

2nd Generation overdrive issue

I had the same thing my truck was kicking in and out of overdrive and the light flashing on and off, not sure if this is the same issue you have but i changed the coolant sensor and it fixed my problem, the light still flashes but i think that is a computer issue, but no more overdrive issues, i also changed the thermostat at the same time(toyota one)even though it did not need it was recommended to do it...hope this helps....simple 50.00 fix

Another possibility is a failing O/D solenoid.

I am sending it to my mechanic and he is gonna service the tranny and also change the overdrive sensor, changing my oil, thermostat, throttle control sensor, and do a complete tune up on it. I hope that fixes it. I know it a little extreme but it prob needs al that anyway. Thanx for the advice.
