Power Steering Quit Working

My metal return line to my power steering rusted out and sprung a leak. I cut out the bad part in the metal line and used a power steering hose and some hose clamps to repair it. I filled it back up with ATF III and it seemed to work fine for a day but then I started noticing that the power steering was going in and out. I assumed I had air in the line so I kept turning the wheel to the left and to the right. Now I have no power steering. Any ideas? Could I have burned out my PS pump? Should I drain the fluid and start over? Could it be something electrical? Please help.

If it is the pump, are they hard to replace?

Try this, Start the engine and slowly loosen the fill cap on the power steering pump. Cycle the steering the same way you did and see if this improves the operation. The cap might not be allowing the air to return back to the pump.

This did not work. I'm thinking about draining the fluid completely and starting over.

Before you drain all the fluid loosen the return line and see if you can get the air out that way by turning the wheel back and forth. Its a little messy but this might help get rid of the air.

This did not work either. I just don't see how my power steering pump burned out so quickly but I guess it did. Are they hard to change out?

I have a leak in my power steering line as well. I'm trying to figure the best way to repair.

It broke at the elbow, close to the rack about 2 inches from the rubber line that attaches to the rack.

Anyone have any suggestions.
a. replace new hard line verses cut portion and put longer rubber line on


What is the correct way of replacing the lines to ensure no air gets introduced?
I tried to go to the service manual link but it failed.
