but then a buddy of mine said to make sure he has gotten the timing belt, and water pump replaced, i guess you're suppose to do it at around 90k
The above advice would be good if the 4Runner had the 5VZ-FE V6 engine... Its going to be a bit hard to change the timing belt on the 4Runner 4 cylinder 3RZ-FE engine, because it doesn't have one... The overhead cams on that engine is driven by two timing chains running in an oil bath inside the front of the engine and are generally only inspected and replaced as part of a major engine overhaul. Even then it is usually only the chain vibration damper/tensioner rails that need to be replaced.

I don't know if the 4 cylinder engine water pump begins to seep a bit like the V6 does, but that water pump is much easier to replace since it is more exposed and accessible than on the V6.. So unless it's seeping, (it would be easy to check the weep hole on the bottom of the pump with an inspection mirror) you don't have much of a case to make him replace it or knock the price down..
