2002-failed emissions

I tried "search" and found nothing-hoping I am not doing this all wrong.
I own 2002 Toy 4 runner SR5 2/2. it failed emissions today-I was surprised. Guy told me it failed due to "readiness' he suggested I drive for 100 miles. I went to a mechanic that put it on a scanner and said YES it is reading 'not ready" He asked me key questions and I answered=no new battery (2 yrs old) has nor been worked on lately in fact last thing done was gas cap replaced 3 months ago and at least 2,000 miles put on it since then. He sent me to another emissions guy who broke the readines thing down and I have a print out that says the two things "not ready" are CATAYST and EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM-this guy told me to drive it on the freeway at 65 for 50 miles and then turn around and drive back at 75 miles for 50 miles? This seems crazy to me as I have driven at least 3 months and serious miles since changing gas caps--any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Usually the "readiness" is caused by someone clearing the codes (check engine light) with an OBDII scanner or if the battery gets disconnected (which also clears codes) but you say that hasn't happened...? If there was something wrong you should get a CEL but I take it you aren't. The guy was right, for the truck to finish the readiness checks driving it for 50-100 miles over a few days should be enough to do it. I"m not sure why yours isn't finishing.
