1997 Toyota 4Runner Alarm won't shut off
I have a 1997 Toyota 4Runner with factory Toyota VIP 3000 alarm system.
I haven't been arming the car the past year because my remote battery died and have been too lazy to get it replaced.
Well I had my car washed this week and somehow the carwash guys set off my car alarm that wasn't even armed, but this was different. The car horn didn't honk in a pattern like it usually does, the horn just stays constantly on and the red alarm indicator light next to my hand break stays lit. Since I didn't have my FOB they just disconnected the battery.
I went to replace the FOB battery, connected the battery and tried to disarm it, but it wouldn't work. So I disconnected the horn fuse so I could work on it so it wouldn't be honking. Well, of course my car won't start because of the kill switch.
for some reason my "door ajar" light stays lit even with all my doors closed. I know you can't arm or disarm with the doors open, so i went and tested each door sensor and they all work. When I have a door open the "door ajar" light and overhead light are on, but when I close the door, I can see both of these dim about 50%, like I closed the door, and when I open, they glow brightly.
Well I discovered that if I connect the battery terminal and quickly try to start the car it will start, with the doors all closed the "door ajar" light is on, but as soon the car starts, the light turns off. If I shut the car off, the "door ajar" light comes on and the alarm beeps. The entire time though, my "red" security light is on (even with the car running), like the alarm is activated. Before this starting happening that light use to always stay off, unless I actually activated the alarm, at that point, it would be a blinking red light, not a constant light.
I called the dealer, and they said a weak battery can cause funky alarm stuff. The battery is only a 1.5 years old, so i don't know that could be it, I'm going to get it checked. But for some reason I think the car wash guys may have shorted out something, shampooing my carpets. I'm trying to find a kill switch or reset button, but I don't have that red button to the left of my dash or any switch under the driver dash.
Anyone have any ideas or advice? Even though i can start my car, the problem is not fixed, bc the alarm is still going off and activated once I shut the car off. Is there any way I can easily just disconnect some wires and turn the system off?
