loud ticking from engine

Hello, i am new to this forum and recently purchased a 1997 toyota 4runner with a 4 cyl engine. Car runs great the only issue im having is a ticking noise that can only be heard from inside the vehicle, it sounds like a small jack hammer. It only starts making the noise after about 10 minutes of the car running, goes away after about 3k rpm but doesnt tick faster when the engine revs higher, just ticks at same rate. But like i said the ticking goes away after about 3k rpm and when the rpm is dropping after being revved or even in gear and let off the gas but then ticks again, also one funny thing is once its ticking, its mostly heard when the car is idling but once the car is turned off and then immediately turned back on the ticking goes away but then comes back on after few minutes as usual. I cant here a thing when i pop the hood and let the car run even tho it can be heard from inside the car. i thought it might be the valves but im sure if it was, the ticking would tick faster as the engine revs and it doesnt, also im sure i would here it when i pop the hood and try to listen for it which i dont here a thing, engine sounds like its running just fine. I also thought it would be the distributor shaft but wouldnt that tick faster when the engine is revved? Any help would be great and thank you

What about a connecting rod broken? If it sounds like marbles in the engine, that could be the torque converter.

4runner 101,

It sounds too me as though it might be the tach. Even though it does not speed up with revs. You could try to find a stethoscope and put it up to the dash and see if you can isolate the ticking.

i dont know how the tach would make that noise but i will give it a shot, it is coming from around that area. ill try just taking the whole thing out and see if the ticking comes on. thanks jetwhine and everyone else for there help

no i dont think its that, then it would only tick when the car is cold. it only ticks after like 10 mins of driving but stops ticking when i turn off the car and then on rite away, then starts again after like a minute. actually, its been like minus 30 here lately and does not tick at all while driving, i think because everything is frozen
