Might buy a repo 02 4-runner...

Hello Folks......Looking at an 2002 SR-5 V6 4-Runner.......I'm aware of most of the used car scenario however, I was wondering if there was anything specific to this vehicle I need to be aware of. Appreciate any Heads-Up I can use !

Would you be getting a great deal on this or what? Unless it's an outstanding deal I think I would shy away. There are lots of runners out there for sale and if they couldn't be responsible enough or just manage to make the payments I doubt they kept up on the maintenance.

JimBowNut,

How many miles? Timing belt should be done at approx every 90K, that would be one thing to consider.

I agree with Jetwhine, if the miles are up there and they probably are the timing belt, water pump are due. Check for leaking rear axle seals. You can tell if they are leaking from gear oil slinging out all over the backsides of the rear wheels. When it's just beginning it may only be wet on the backside of the drums.

Also the pink/strawberry milkshake that happens if the trans cooler that's built into the radiator leaks. You end up with trans fluid in the engine coolant and coolant in the trans. It will kill the transmission pretty quick. If there's a sign the radiator has been changed recently I would stay away. Most people don't change radiators as part of routine maintenance.

Yes.....those are good suggestions.......I happen to have access to the service records for the last few years.....Trans flush in 2010......regular oil changes, etc.,......173k...... now some people would stay away at that mileage, BUT, I'm a Believer ! ......Gotta take a chance at that price......Just want to check against any known issues.

I think for the later years of 3rd gens there was also a recall on the lower ball joint. I would check to see if that's been done and if not change them out. There have been quite a few failures once these get up higher in mileage. 173 isn't bad, I bought mine with 176K and it's run perfect for the last 2 years. Has 196K on it now.
