Tranny

Have question about tranny. I have a 98 4runner auto, & for quite some time now when it is cold out my tranny delays shifting from second to third until the tranny is warmed up. This never use to happen so before I take it to a trusting Tranny shop I would like to get a couple of opinions. Thanx ar

Have you changed the tranny fluid out recently? When was the last time it was done?

It's normal. It's designed to hold in 2nd until you go past 2700 rpm or it sees an engine temp of around 130F. It's trying to warm up the engine quicker. Once it shifts into third the first time it should not "hold" in second again.

Talking KentuckyGirl with same problem

Hello all,
I'm a newbie here, but have been able to find a lot about my 2001 4runner through this site. I think it's awesome so I finally registered. I am having the same problem with my 4runner. I used to live in Wyoming and as cold as it got there, I never had this problem before. Just in the past 4 months since it's gotten colder here in Ky, I have started having this problem.

It seems to run fine after it's warmed up but sometimes it takes 1/2 mile of driving and as the previous person said, at about 2700 rpm's it will finally shift. Will it hurt it to run this way and why all of a sudden did it start? Do I need to have the transmission checked out?

Thanks guys!

it's normal KentuckyGirl. I have no idea why it never did it before but it's perfectly normal for it to hold 2nd gear until the engine warms up a bit.

2nd Generation Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply kball. It just worries me that it never happened before. My co-worker who used to work on racing cars told me I should probably get the transmission flushed and filled. Since i've got $143,000 miles on there and never had that done, I think it would be a great idea also. My Dad was a mechanic so I was always his helper when I was young. He always stressed keeping your oil checked and changed, but never stressed about the transmission fluid except keeping it checked. Guess I always thought it was ok because I'd always have it checked when my oil was changed. Oh well, one's never too old to learn, right?

I agree, with that many miles you are overdue for a change. You could just do several drain and fills but it would be more efficient to do it all at once.
