New Muffler pricing?

My bracket holding the tailpipe finally rusted thru and dropped off about an hour ago - some kind guy stopped and helped me secure it to the frame so I could drive without dragging it - it came off of the muffler as well so it's just unconnected now. I stopped at Monroe muffler for a quote just now - 3.4 l engine - 2002 4runner = $1000 for muffler & tailpipe but he'd do it for $500 and change including labor AND are open New Years Day, Monday etc - when no one else is. I need your expert opinions - you all helped me so much in the past - is it worth doing this asap with Monroe? I'm in Buffalo, NY. Any help would be appreciated

That's a lot of cash for a muffler and tailpipe. I assume it's stainless steel?

I don't know actually - it was just a quick quote...what do you think it should cost?

Regular aluminized muffler and tailpipe should run about 200 bucks retail. Stainless probably 100 more.

I ended up taking it back to my amazing mechanic who got me in & out in a few hours - tail pipe, muffler, new front brakes all total $800 or so. Not terrible since it went 10 years without a muffler done in the snow belt...
